Welcome Back To Mirzapur!

After an enduring two year wait for the eagerly awaited second instalment of Mirzapur, (easily one of the most exhilarating masterpieces in recent times), our thirst was finally quenched in October 2020! Season Two begins with a recollection of the all too painful wounds that were inflicted onto us last Season and we were yet again transported back into this fantastically fiendish World!

Visionary Creator, Puneet Krishna once again entices us into the madness that is Mirzapur, through great authenticity and uniquely woven characters. Puneet’s charismatically colourful dialogue and art of storytelling drive the Story forward on a thrilling trip, across connected landscapes and feuding households. Puneet and Vineet Krishna’s writing-style is a brilliant ‘jugal bandi’ of wit, passion and originality that creates an everlasting impression on the Actors who have forever immortalised their words on screen.

Brilliantly passionate Director, Gurmmeet Singh skilfully steers us through the rocky shores of the distinctly crafted milieu of Mirzapur. Gurmmeet’s direction has the Audience insanely hypnotised and I truly believe that he is one of the finest Directors working in India today! Dynamic Director, Mihir Desai equally intrigues us through his inventive and masterful direction. I was in absolute awe of the creative and powerful moments he captured on screen this Season. I just know that both Gurmmeet and Mihir are Film Fanatics at heart! This is one Director Duo that truly works perfectly in synch throughout the Season! The Team at Excel Media and Entertainment, headed by Producers Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar have done a stellar job and once again present us with another captivating Season of this quintessential and beautifully gruesome Show!

The Cinematography by Sanjay Kapoor, Energetic Score by John Stewart Eduri, Editing by Manan Ashwin Mehta & Anshul R Gupta, Production Design by Sonam Singh & Abhijit Gaonkar and Action Direction by Manohar Verma have all successfully captured the real essence, that truly makes Mirzapur alarmingly authentic! As the all too familiar Mirzapur Theme Song commences in Episode One (‘Dhenkul’); our hearts are immediately elevated and we can no longer contain our excitement any further!

[Please only continue reading… if you are completely up to date with Mirzapur Part One and Two, as there are major spoilers ahead!!!]

A Ferocious Return…

Mirzapur’s beloved Tripathi Parivaar resurfaces in all its glory. Pankaj Tripathi returns as the perfectly alluring Kaleen Bhaiya and perplexes us with his calm but ruthless nature. He is the ultimate ‘Daddy Cool’ and stuns the Audience with yet another riveting performance. From his way of speaking to his facial expressions (a meme’s delight!), he is truly authentic as the ‘Bahubali of Mirzapur’ and I cannot get enough of this fine Actor!

Rasika Dugal is brilliantly bold and someone I feel is a true ‘Cinematic Chameleon’. I mean, is there any role she can’t play? Beena is quite frankly one of my all time favourite characters in Mirzapur, as I’m a great admirer of her masterclass of expressive emotions and dynamic delivery throughout her nuanced perfomance. Rasika Dugal has truly set a new standard for three-dimensional female roles, effortlessly crafting a ‘Lady of the Manor’ in true Shakespearean style; with all her vices and virtues meticulously woven into her ever developing character arc.

The evergreen Kulbhushan Kharbanda returns as the head of the Tripathi clan and it’s so fantastic that fine Actors such as Kulbhushan ji are still crafting remarkable performances, even at a senior stage in their career. The man is sheer ‘barbaric’ perfection as Bauji and nobody else would dare to play such a dynamic role with such dramatic vibrancy!

As Season Two picks up from the aftermath of the ‘Shabnam Shaadi Massacre’, Munna is seen to be mentally recharging. He utters to Lalit (his last remaining henchman), “Hindi Film ke Hero hain bei hum. Humme koi nahi maar sak ta. Hum Amar hai”. Divyenndu is a truly transformative thespian who has created a villain for the ages in Munna Tripathi. His ferocious return is insanely welcomed by all Mirzapur Fans. Divyenndu’s vicious path breaking performance truly showcases the layers an Actor must delve into, in order to be truly ‘immortal’ in the ‘New Theatre of our Age’. There are simply not enough words to describe Divyenndu’s brilliantly bestial portrayal as Munna!

Lalit is fantastically funny (played by the engaging Bramhaswaroop Mishra) and his position as ‘Munna’s Maqbool’ is rather short-lived after mercilessly being discarded and made into the villainous scape-goat of the ‘Shabnam Shaadi Massacre’. Shahnawaz Pradhan returns as Gupta, as he has to continue to face his Daughter’s killer, who is calmly recovering in his room. He emotionally exclaims to Kaleen Bhaiya: “Aap kese samje ge humara dukh?… Aulaad humari maree hai, aapki nahi!”

This Season, we also meet a mournful Lala, sitting beside his ‘Samdhi Jee’ overlooking the freshly fragrant grave of Dara. Lala beautifully states: “Takleef unki nahi hoti jo chale jaate hain, takleef unki hoti joh peeche ra jaate hain”. The amazingly talented, Anil George crafts his character with such charm and dexterity and adds a graceful gravitas to the Storyline.

Puraane Zakham…

As the Story kicks off, we bear witness to two shadowy creatures lurking through the dark skies of the tranquil and rural backdrop of the cinematically vibrant, Uttar Pradesh! As the figures rummage through a deserted store picking up the bare essentials (such as noodles and sanitary pads), we are reintroduced to the survivors, our Heroes now in Exile: Golu, Dimpy and Guddu.

Golu is no longer that ‘Chuphey Rustom’ bookworm, Dimpy is no longer the carefree ‘Choti Behen’ and Guddu is no longer the aspiring ‘Mr. Purvanchal’!

Apna Guddu Bhaiya returns with an insanely roaring appetite for revenge as the lion hearted Guddu Pandit. Ali Fazal’s iconic virtuoso performance has forever set the benchmark for all future streaming shows. Guddu’s quest is the ultimate ‘samurai story’ which lays the ultimate foundation upon which the Show’s progression and trajectory takes place. Fazal carries the heart and soul of a new age Maverick with the timeless nuances of cinematic royalty. Season Two basks in the highly flammable petroleum that is Guddu’s revenge, however Fazal plays ‘Guddu 2.0’ with an emotional restraint which exhibits his changed mental state, almost re-energised for the sake of the restless souls of his loved ones (whose memories are now kept alive deeply in the chambers of his heart!) His brooding but sensitive presence triangulates between vision, vengeance and virtue, creating the landmark silhouette of a 21st Century Cult Icon!

Shweta Tripathi Sharma is courageous as ‘Golu 2.0’; a completely changed woman now inheriting the responsibility of her beloved Bablu. Shweta is a unique bona fide Actor and does not shy away from physically challenging roles. It was deeply impressive to see her take on a more aggressive dimension this Season, due to Mirzapur’s exceptional gender fluid writing. The most heartbreaking moment about Golu’s new found role is that her circumstances mean that she can no longer remain the College ‘President Sahiba’ casually eating ‘Aloo Patis’ and Studying. ‘Gajjumal’s’ Gajagamini Gupta has completely transformed into a ‘Zakhmi Sherni’, a ‘Lioness of Mirzapur’. She has befriended the very violence that was once her worst enemy.

The beautifully elegant Harshita Shekhar Gaur returns as the forever changed Dimpy Pandit. Harshita’s Dimpy is no damsel in distress, as she still packs that very mean punch, we witnessed in Season One. This young ‘Stree of Mirzapur’ is a fine fresh face, oozing with such class and charm, adding a refreshing sight to the new found trivium dynamic in Exile. Her style and personality has a magical aura that resonates on screen. Her connection with Fazal’s Guddu is a beautifully engaging sibling spark that has sustained throughout both Seasons. I am quite sure that Gaur will be in a period piece someday.

As the girls return with the supplies, we find an unstable Guddu, traumatically reliving that night, by continuously being haunted by visions of Munna. He attempts to overpower his own Doctor in a state of daze (played by the brilliant Dibyendu Bhattacharya). As Golu very calmly states: “…Badla lene ke liye, Shareer mein Takhat honi chay hai”, suggesting Guddu is still too frail to return to the familiar surroundings of Mirzapur. The Exile sequence is an exhilarating rediscovery of the ‘stripped back’ essence of Mirzapur, which showcases the harsh reality of the protagonists and their situation, whilst surviving on rations unable to return to the safety of normal life. Dimpy notices that they have not even had time to fully process their grief… “Humme se koi roya bhi nai,ab tak!”. As they fight off the Raddiwala, (played authentically by Amarjit Singh) and Inspector Dinanath Chauhan (Akash Pandey), I truly loved the intimate nature of the Hideout scene that felt a million miles away from the colour palette of the ‘Bloodbath Wedding’. After their cover is blown; the Doctor is forced to drive the exiles to a new safehouse (his own family home) where they receive a warm welcome by his Wife (Ankita Gusain). I truly loved the Hideout scenes and I could easily have stayed in Exile with our Heroes for another few episodes!

Mirzapur Lehna Hai…

This Season, we are formerly introduced to Sharad Shukla, played with such subtle sophistication by Anjum Sharma, who has become a household name after the success of his fine performance. As the new voice of Jaunpur, Sharad now mourns the death of his Father, Rati Shankar Shukla. Meghna Malik as Shakuntala Shukla is superb as Sharad’s mother and Rati Shankar’s grieving Widow. She guides her Son through their combined quest for vengeance: “Uss ke liye toh Mirzapur lehna hoga na. Tumhare Papa toh yeh hee chaatein teh. Jeet ki guarantee tabhi hain jab, jeet aur haar dono tumhare control mein ho”. This Season, Sharad becomes a skilful mastermind with a superior understanding of the inner workings of the Tripathi family. It is with great expertise that Sharad manages to win over Munna’s loyalty and trust by bringing him to Shabnam’s ex Father-in-law, Yusuf Saab (Suniil Raghuvansh). Anjum Sharma’s Sharad cleverly states to Munna, “Ab tum aur hum nayi peeri hai, toh Bhai niyam bhi nayi hone chay!”. To which Munna replies, “Niyam ek hee hai Shukla. Loyal rehna hoga!” His unique taste for fine wine drinking is revitalising in a whiskey and ‘bhaukaal’ beer driven World. He is perhaps a young Kaleen Bhaiya- subtle, calm in nature and opportunistic in a way that we not seen before. Unlike Munna, who is very much like his Grandfather, the beastly Bauji!

As the remaining Pandit siblings return home albeit temporarily, they are greeted by a distraught Mother and grieving Father played splendidly by the exceptionally talented Sheeba Chadha and the deeply pensive Rajesh Tailang. This is no longer the Pandit family we were introduced to in the first ever episode of Mirzapur. This is a completey subdued Pandit Parivaar mentally shattered by the aftermath of the ‘Shabnam Shaadi Massacre’! Chadha and Tailang add layers of gravitas to their respected roles, creating an understated excellence in this ‘Golden Jodi’. Ramakant very aptly states: “Aadmi ke paas humesha choice hoti hain, aur woh kya choonta hai, ussi ke haath mein hota hain”. With great painful sorrow, Guddu emotionally stutters to his Father: “Aap kush hote, Bablu ki jagha hum marey hote”. Meanwhile, Golu visits her distressed Father and states with great conviction: “Aap hi ka mann ta na, ke aap ki Beti Mirzapur pe raj karein? Badhi na saye, Choti karengi!”

Naye Rishte…

Shaji Choudhary is simply marvellous as the ‘Herculean’ Maqbool. His memorable character returns with a multifarious range of emotions and we are presented with more than just merciless masculinity, but rather a multifaceted, nurturing and loving family man. I was absolutely captivated with Maqbool’s Home life, as his role as primary caregiver to his ailing ‘Ammi’ adds depths of layers to his character arc and development. Choudhary has a peculiar quality, in that he can give heart to such a physical role. His eyes speak of an expressive journey into a World of ‘Cinematic Strong Men’, throughout his many roles including ‘Jodhaa-Akbar’, ‘PK’ and ‘Kaabil’ and of course here in Mirzapur (where through the direction and writing), a Character Actor is allowed to reinvent himself and create an everlasting impression onto the Story. He is possibly the most underrated of all the main stars, and deserves to feature amongst the greats! As Maqbool gently feeds his Mother Biryani, he asks: “Babar, Shaadi ka kuch soche ho?”, advising Babar not to give up on the charms of ‘marital bliss’, which beautifully demonstrates what Maqbool has actually had to give up due to his life-long loyalty to the Tripathis: “Humari tarha mat reh jaana Miyan…”

As Guddu, Golu and Dimpy re-ignite their plans for vengeance, they stop by Lala’s Haveli, equally in mourning after pyaari Beti Shabnam’s tragic Wedding. With Dimpy’s help, Guddu and Golu are initially allowed into the lavish Balia Haveli. Guddu makes a proposition to Lala, as he claims: “Sirf hum jaante hai, woh kese soch teh hai. Zaroorat sirf humari nai. Aap ki bhi ho sak thi”.

A few days later, in order to build a formal alliance with the sophisticated Lala, Guddu seeks to entice this affluent businessman with an alluring amount of 35 Lakhs. Guddu presents a business pitch over the phone, asking Lala to provide 35 Lakhs worth of ‘Barfi’ and to allow Guddu to make the powerful Lala a handsome amount of profit. This deal becomes a highly successful venture as Guddu delivers on his promise, making Lala a profit of unbelievable magnitude. Pleased with this, Lala offers Guddu, Golu and Babar a restful night’s sleep at his Haveli on neutral ground in Mau: “Humari ummeed se uphar kaam kiya hai aap ne”. An advantageous Guddu seeks a more permanent arrangement at Lala’s prominent Haveli in Balia, as he requests “Lala…Aap ki Haveli mein bohot jagha khali hai?”

But, it isn’t all smooth sailing as the omniscient Tripathis have eyes and ears everywhere. Before I observe the intricately woven tracking shot, I would just like to mention that I saw a rather familiar face in the form of the ‘paan stained teeth man’ in this episode. As I hit pause, I finally realised: “Is that Jojo from Soldier (1998)?”. As a 90’s kid, I grew up watching all the brilliantly dynamic films of that era and was so overjoyed to witness Jitendra Badriprasad Verma’s (aka Jeetu Verma), a cult icon on a Show such as this. Of course, he was in other films throughout the years but I still remember him as the colourful, roller- skating, braided hair ‘Jojo’!

Scene In Focus…

This brilliant tracking shot begins with the Tripathi henchmen covertly being led to the neutral ground of Mau. As they jump off the dishevelled boat, they camouflage themselves through the dusky backdrop as the camera simultaneously sweeps through a beautiful tracking set piece with Babar sprinting up the ancient Haveli steps. As Munna’s mercenaries climb up the tower using just the ledges of the exterior, the viewing experience feels like we too are hoisted up to feel the heightened magnitude of the excellence of this dramatic direction by Mihir Desai. I was transported to the film school excellence of De Palma’s ‘Scarface’ 1983 Finale and also felt like I was playing a ‘Rockstar’ video game on my Playstation. As Jeetu Verma’s brilliantly unsavoury villain, enters the balcony, you just know this scene is going to be the pinnacle of the meticulous cinematography which showcases the gravitas of the World of Mirzapur.

The stained teeth man successfully discards Lala’s watchman and switches off the circuit board, rendering the Haveli into complete darkness. The scene becomes gloomily lit, with just a few silhouettes on show, as the stained teeth man bites into his torch. Golu soon emerges and is swift to respond shooting towards the torch in the all encompassing darkness. As the the torch bearing goon becomes disorientated, he falls flat on the ground deeply wedging the torch into his jaw and making it a permanent fixture to his grill. It was absolutely ironic that the same Jeetu Verma’s ‘Jojo’, who had his teeth burnt with a matchstick in ‘Soldier’ (1998) was yet again faced with another ‘Dental Dilemma’ 22 years later in Mirzapur!

As Lala is resting, he is immediately wounded by the second Tripathi henchman played by Gunjan, who is then shot at by the immensely fast Golu. Meanwhile, the stained teeth man continues to run around the building, as his torch glimmers on a rather calm and collected shadow. He mumbles through his torch: “Guddu Bhaiya!…”, as Fazal’s Guddu has already calculated what is to become of this brilliantly iconic Tripathi henchman. Unable to remove the torch, we comically follow this unique ‘baddie’ around the Haveli. Golu finds both Tripathi henchmen curled up behind some boxes and she chases the teeth stained man out with her ‘bandookh’, leading him outside. As Jeetu Verma’s character stumbles down the grim ‘Ghat’ steps, he witnesses a limping silhouette approach him. As he begs for mercy, his jaw is soon grasped by the unforgiving Guddu who then twists the torch (as if it were a doorknob), exhibiting a rather painful dislocation of the new ‘Torch -Jaw’ fixture. Lala is pleased with Guddu and Golu yet again, having earnestly earned his new trust and alliance.

As A Result…

The next morning, a package is delivered by an elderly old fashioned postman in Dinesh Srivastava to the ‘Tripathi Carpet Company’. Munna is angered by the ‘paan’ and blood stained teeth that have been delivered alongside an ‘official’ Letter of Resignation by Guddu! Kaleen shockingly exclaims, “Guddu abhi Zinda hai!” This episode dramatically ends… but with the power of binge-watching, I just had to indulge with another episode!

Having now moved in with Lala at his Haveli, Guddu and Golu share a beautifully touching moment. Laying beside each other, they mourn their beloved Sweety and Bablu: “Sweety aur Bablu ki bohot yaad aathi hai”. Then they face each other before finally embracing: “Golu. Ronhe se kamjhor toh nai par jayenge na hum?”. The relationship dynamic between Guddu and Golu is intriguing, as our previous ‘Jee Ja Jee- Sali’ Duo has become quite complicated. Golu has transitioned into a fellow ‘Lioness of Mirzapur’, almost becoming an ‘avatar’ of Bablu. As she reads Bablu’s diary, she becomes even closer to her long lost love. I believe that, it is Golu’s character arc that has developed the most since her introduction in Season One. Through her circumstances, she has unfortunately grown up quicker than Dimpy, (who later goes on to resume a somewhat normal existence in Lucknow).

Everlasting Impressions…

One of the key highlights of Mirzapur Part Two has been the evolution of certain characters, including the fearless Nitin Mahesh Joshi rising from the ashes and returning as a newly formed ‘Raja 2.0’. I was incredibly happy to see Raja come back even stronger, especially after what had taken place last Season. In Part Two, we witness Raja’s transformation from the noble Tripathi household employee, into a fully fledged right-hand man of Beena (almost as Maqbool is to Kaleen Bhaiya or Babar is to Guddu).

Beena’s ‘pregnant power of persuasion’ with Kaleen, Bauji and Raja, becomes her greatest weapon. As Raja is no longer able to conceive, his only ray of hope lies in Beena’s womb. Raja is willing to kill or be killed for the sake of ‘his’ child. Nitin’s Raja has definitely left an everlasting impression on all Mirzapur Fans, as this young Actor holds his own in front of his senior players, with a genuine honesty and uniquely nuanced quality that is rare in Today’s World. His character arc has evolved immensely this Season, no longer the timid household employee (serving ‘Gajjar ka Halwa’), but an integral catalyst in Beena’s revenge plan. His sensitivity and dedication to the craft, can only lead to an exciting future ahead. I can’t wait to see him in more Excel Projects! A fine example of Raja’s transformation is illustrated, as he manages to get away with mysteriously discarding Kaleen’s Doctor (to avoid Kaleen’s low conception rate coming to light). I must also say, that Nagendra Pratap Singh Verma was excellently comical as Kaleen’s Dr. Madhushudhan Sharma.

The superbly authentic, Aasif Khan returns and I was so pleased to see that Babar’s loyalty did not shift direction post Season One. Aasif Khan is a true talent who shines bright as Guddu’s right- hand man. His interplay with Ali Fazal is a fantastic tag team relationship which has a truly brother-like bond and dare I say, it stands out as much as Guddu and Golu’s Duo. Khan in creating Babar portrays an ‘everyman’ character that relishes at the chance to showcase his brilliance. In fact, some of the best scenes this Season took place between Babar, Maqbool and his Grandmother at Home. Khan brings a truly realistic persona to the character with a genuine humility and soul. This character Actor has been working hard for years and it is always great to see him in many a Web Series from ‘Paatal Lok’ to ‘Jamtara’. He always portrays underrated characters, who revel in the realities of the Story at heart. A definite future star to look out for…

Another evolved role is that of the beautifully expressive Shernavaz Jijina, playing the ‘Tragic Bride’ Shabnam. I must say, that I felt a deep sense of joy as Shabnam returned this time not simply as Dimpy’s ‘Saheli’ or Lala’s ‘Beti’ but as a character who stands true in her own right. It was her Wedding after all! Jijina plays Shabnam with a subtle charm that creates a uniquely gifted future talent, adding a genuine star quality to the role. The introduction of a love triangle between Golu, Guddu and Shabnam was fascinating and integral to the character’s transformation, thanks to the wonderful writing at Excel. Shabnam’s progressive love story with Guddu was a beautifully engaging window into a World of Hope. As both of them were in a similar situation on that fateful night, the two are able to form a deep and soulful connection that transcends Religious Differences and Societal Divide. Shabnam shares with Guddu: “Tum humari takleef samje. Woh kafi hai!”. To which Guddu replies: “Tumhari takleef isalye samje, waheen takleef humari bhi hai”. I found myself rooting for Shabnam and Guddu throughout the Season and I truly hope they do have a ‘happily ever after’ ending.

Priyanshu Painyuli is a fantastic new addition to the Cast. Robin’s introduction in a predominantly Alpha Male driven World, is a refreshing sight as the quirky, colourful ‘whiz-kid’. Painyuli’s unusual style and wit adds layers to the World of Mirzapur. A completely original star with an intelligent sensitivity that leaves a distinctly fragrant aroma through his wonderfully vibrant introduction. His blossoming love story with Dimpy is truly heartwarming. It’s interesting that Dimpy’s choice is similar in stature and sensitivity to her dearly departed brother Bablu. Perhaps Robin may fill the painful void that Bablu left in the Pandit Niwas! I must say, “Yeh bhi theek hain” has become a favourite expression of mine. Robin’s charming and persuasive personality makes him the ultimate salesman and ‘smart-ass’. He even manages to sell the Pandit’s flat (initially bought by Guddu and Bablu for their parents). He can slip out of sticky situations, just with his intelligence and charm alone. He creates a multitude of connections, in particular with Chote Tyagi, whom he introduces to Golu and Guddu. Some Mirzapur Fans have even doubted Robin’s ‘intentions’, as they believe he could be a ‘ploy’ working for Guddu’s enemies. However, I’m of a differing opinion, as I truly believe that Robin is genuine and he may become an integral part of the Pandit family in Season Three. Dimpy’s love story with Robin depicts love in its purest form and shines a much needed light through the darkness of Mirzapur. One could also argue that Dimpy was indirectly responsible for another blossoming romance of Mirzapur in that of Guddu & Shabnam’s.

Neon Nights…

Back at the Tripathi House, Kaleen Bhaiya chairs a meeting and Munna’s ruthlessness is yet again at an all time high as he claims: “Mirzapur ki Ghadi pe behtne wala, kabhi bhi niyam badal sak ta hai”. After the Tripathi meeting, Sharad later finds Munna drinking alone. Along with the wine, Sharad fuels Munna with great provocation: “Tum aur hum milke maarenge…”.

A very strategic Sharad manages to arrange a meeting disguising himself as ‘Nand Kishore’- a potential Customer. Sharad is cautiously led by an inquisitive Babar towards Guddu. As the ‘Tittar Bittar’ song (sung rhythmically by Isheeta Chakrvarty) is brought to life on screen by Amika Shail sarcastically enticing the seedy audience into the neon lit mood of the ‘Suroor Bar’, Munna enters with a clear intention of finishing off the job he initially began at Shabnam’s Wedding. With the catchy gaana still echoing in the background, Sharad comes face to face with his Father’s killer, Guddu. As Sharad blows his cover posing as ‘Nand Kishore’, Guddu sarcastically questions, “Nand Kishore, tumhara naam kya hai?”. Sharad reaches for his golden ‘bandookh’ officially introducing himself to his Father’s killer. “Sharad Shukla hain Humara Naam…”. Guddu comically replies that he once taught his Father the Hindi alphabet: “…Baap ko poora sikhay teh hum”.

The ‘Suroor Bar’ also bears witness to Guddu and Munna’s unconventional reunion, as they finally lock eyes through the dusty rubble and those sore memories become a painful reality, as their rage is once again unearthed. As Guddu fights both Munna and Sharad, the outstandingly loyal Babar fights with Sharad’s right hand man, played authentically by Virendrapratap Giri. Guddu hits Munna against the brick wall and gives him a deadly blow to the face. Munna drops to the ground like a dizzy cartoon character. As Munna lays on the ground, Sharad skilfully uses Guddu’s own crutch as a weapon against him. Guddu’s face is ‘crutchfully scarred’ as he attempts to grab the walking aid from Sharad. As Sharad is held in a headlock, Munna tries to join in on the action. We start to see the return of the ‘2018 Mr. Purvanchal’ as Guddu regains his physical strength by grasping both his enemies in a dual headlock, by overpowering both men; Guddu tightens his arms with enemies still locked, flexing his biceps in an iconic ‘Cinematic Bodybuilding freeze- frame’. However soon after, gravity changes hands as Munna and Sharad combine their weight to push Guddu back! As the three men recover on the ground, Sharad takes the opportunity to collapse the mezzanine storage pillar by repeatedly kicking it like a ‘Gully’ footballer, and as a result Guddu is trapped under the rubble.

Sharad’s right hand man enters and carries away a disorientated Munna along with Sharad, who later shoots back at Babar as they leave the Bar. A wounded Babar gains some strength to find Guddu laying beneath a wooden ladder beam. As he pushes away the ladder, and regains composure, Guddu breathes a sigh of relief as his Shakespearean blood scarred face triumphantly emerges through the dilapidated rubble. He laughs at the situation with an adrenaline fuelled giggle; at the chance to fight again, suggesting ‘Mr. Purvanchal’ is back in Town! As Golu reaches the ‘Suroor Bar’, she finds a mentally rejuvenated Guddu: “Bohot maja aaya hai Golu…Guddu Pandit wapas aage hai”.

Is Blood Really Thicker Than Water?

As Babar’s opposing loyalties no longer remain a secret, I find myself constantly praying for his safety. Maqbool is very gently ordered by the ever so calm Kaleen Bhaiya: “Babar ka matter close karo”. The deliciously iconic scene between Maqbool ‘Mamu’ and ‘Bhanja’ is a favourite, as they both confront each other through their conflicting loyalties over a slow cooked plate of Biryani. As this uncle- nephew ‘Jodi’ face each other, Maqbool asks “Babar? Wafadaari bhool ke tum?”. To which Babar replies, “Guddu Bhaiya ke liye wafadaar hai hum…” and Maqbool sombrely responds, “Aur hum Kaleen Bhaiya ke liye”.

As Beena comes to Lucknow to spend some time with family, she makes an unusual connection and new alliance. Through Raja, she sends a message with mutton to Gupta. We witness Golu and Gupta brewing some plans with Beena. Later, Golu makes an accurate realisation: “Bablu sahi samje te. Kaleen Bhaiya ki family undhar se kokli hee hai. Humme usi ka use karna hoga”. Taking advantage over the lack of security in the ‘Tripathi Carpet Company’, Golu and Guddu head to Mirzapur and set it alight, causing damage to Kaleen’s ‘Kato ka Viyapaar’.

With Dimpy fully settled at ‘Lucknow University’, her Mother visits to gain some insight into that dreadful night that stole her Bablu Beta, Sweety Bahu and future Grandchild. As Vasudha questions her Daughter, Dimpy responds: “Woh raat kabhi nahi bhool sak te”. Later, Dimpy emotionally exclaims: “Humme Beti hee rehnede. Gawah na banaye!”. Vasudha and Ramakant return Home without any evidence to form a case against the perpetrators of the night that robbed them of their happiness.

A Royal Wedding…

Amongst the fresh new faces introduced this Season, my favourite has been Isha Talwar in the form of Madhuri Yadav Tripathi. Isha becomes Madhuri with such finesse and truly leaves the Audience in awe of her presence and I absolutely love that she eventually becomes the Chief Minster; holding the highest position amongst her household. Working closely with PA Anand (Rohit Tiwari), Madhuri soon becomes well informed about the ‘Political Power Play’ happening around her. Her chemistry with Munna is sheer dramatic dynamite. Isha’s Madhuri provides the much needed balance to Munna’s temperament! Talwar’s fierce delivery and acting gravitas is wholeheartedly welcomed into a World of Men. She creates a unique poetry with her face, that is magnetic to watch. This ‘choti’ Mrs.Tripathi has become a successful rival to Beena, both independently strong women ruling over the Tripathi Niwas.

Kaleen Bhaiya and J.P. Yadav’s older Brother, CM Surya Pratap Yadav (played with great conviction by Paritosh Sand) form a familial, as well as a political bond. Kaleen’s opportunistic nature further grants him a great position at the ‘Lok Swaraj Party’. As Kaleen’s ‘Rishta’ for his Son Munna to marry Madhuri is accepted, both Fathers of the Bride and Groom use this simple Court Marriage to their great advantage. It was definitely not the type of ‘Royal Wedding’ we were expecting from the Tripathi Parivaar!
An excited Madhuri is later left disheartened, when Munna tells his new Bride that he only married her out of parental pressure. However, the Wedding seems to have paid off, as the ‘Lok Swaraj Party’ goes on to have an astounding victory at the Election Polls and Kaleen gets politically more involved with his new ‘Samdhi-Jee’.

A Familiar Face…

Still in search of Witnesses, Vakeel Saab Ramakant finds a familiar Witness in the form of Imran Alam, played with such ‘nazaaqhat’ by Hemant Kapadia. I must say, that one of the best Fan cheering moments was the return of the famous ‘Chacha’ from Shabnam’s Wedding. This former Wedding Guest is ready to become the sole Witness for the ‘Shaadi Massacre’ and is looking to put Munna behind bars, as he beautifully verbalises: “Mamla darr ka nahi hai, Izzat ka hai”. Ramakant also finds out Maurya has secretly been in talks with Imran Alam. Both Vakeel and Officer share a unique ‘Bromance’ initiated by their similar ethical ideologies and quest for justice. As they create a case file for the ‘Gorakhpur Wedding’, with the One Witness ready to testify.

Extended Landscapes…

This Season, we are introduced to a vibrant new family, in the form of the Tyagi Clan from Bihar; whom have shared previous ties with the Shukla family in Jaunpur. I must say, that the Tyagis were burdened with a rather difficult task- to leave a solid impression in this unforgiving World of Mirzapur Fandom and to rival the already much loved Pandit and Tripathi families.

Vijay Varma is enthusiastically enticing! He brings a theatrical duality in the form of Chote and Badhe Tyagi, as two different creative personas sharing the same face. His performance as Chote Tyagi feels as if, it is an ode to the brilliantly colourful, Johnny Depp in ‘Once Upon A Time In Mexico’. Varma is someone, I’ve always admired because he adds a distinct depth to his roles. Already a household name in many projects, he creates an otherworldly charm to this double role, captivating any Audience. His unusual relationship with Golu creates another eccentric relationship in the World of Mirzapur. Chote’s compassion balances Golu’s aggressive nature. Varma’s Badhe Tyagi is the complete opposite in mannerisms and personality (who could forget that Wedding Ring trick?). As someone who has loved Varma’s work for years, I’m so excited to see where his character takes us post Season Two. Chote’s constant battle between Father and Son is a resembling sight to the relationship dynamic that both Guddu and Munna share with their forever disapproving Fathers. As we especially witnessed in Season One, Kaleen Bhaiya perceives Munna to be unworthy of the ‘Mirzapur ki Ghadi’. Kaleen Bhaiya even mentions this Season to Munna: “Jab tak mature nahi ho jaate, nahi milegi Ghadi”. Equally, Guddu and Ramakant’s relationship is also strained, even more so this Season.

Liliput Faruqui’s Dadda Tyagi is an enigmatic addition to the Cast. His character is crafted with the utmost careful consideration, as he is not a victim of his physical stature but rather a very commanding ‘Bahubali of Bihar’. In fact, it was so very refreshing to see a character such as him, shown in a serious light- as opposed to the usual caricatures we have been presented with over the years in Bollywood! For Dadda Tyagi, Badhe is his ‘guroor’ and Chote is the ‘joker’ of his household.

Despite working for his Father, Chote is hasty in nature and hellbent on establishing himself. Therefore, he eventually strikes a secret deal with Golu and Guddu. Chote’s generous nature also brings forth an interesting venture with his Mamaji, Raghu (Shrikant Verma). Chote attempts to present new business clients to his forever disapproving Twin and Father. As Guddu and Golu appear with a business pitch, we hear a rather unsettling tale about Dadda. The Tyagi family life is also explored as the family gathers for dinner, illustrating an interesting depiction of their power position in Bihar. Dadda alongside his Sons, sits with Wife Geeta (Alka Amin) and Bahu Saloni (Neha Sargam) and Granddaughter Ginni (Nitara Bhambhani), all providing an interesting addition to the Parivaar.

Hierarchies Highlighted…

Pramod Pathak returns as the ill intentioned J.P. Yadav, but this time the hierarchy in his family is highlighted with the introduction of his elder CM Brother. This Season, J.P. becomes a problem and eventual rival to Kaleen Bhaiya. Unlike in the previous Season, Kaleen no longer holds J.P. in high regard and willingly disregards him on future political endeavours. Pramod Pathak is stunningly perfect as the crooked Politician and I can’t see anyone else playing this role. His way of walking, sitting and eating is a joy to watch on screen.

Anangsha Biswas’ Zarina has developed incredibly, as she is now a vital part of J.P.’s political cabinet. She is cunning and no one would dare to cross her; another evolving character who has been granted with a further developed character arc. She gives the role a sustained quality, that showcases a brilliant future. The transition from ‘Item Girl’ to Politician is a refreshing update to the Season.  Biswas adds a true cinematic quality to her updated appearance! J.P. later hosts Sharad in a secret meeting and we see yet another crooked alliance form, as Sharad calmly proposes, “…Badle mein aap ko jab bhi zaroorat pari gi, bas ke di jiyega…”, if J.P. Yadav can guarantee Mirzapur to him.

As Guddu returns to the Balia Haveli, Lala reading an Urdu newspaper asks where his supplies are going. Guddu cements his position with Lala stating, “Hum jis type ke Aadmi hai na Lala, usme dikhat yeheen hai, ke humme khud nahi patha ke hum kab kya karenge”.

A 4×4 Jeep arrives at a seedy Barbershop, as Guddu attempts to build future backup against the Tripathis. Sheku Nai is played with great ferociousness by multi-talented Ali Quli Mirza, who adds a fantastically menacing touch to the Show. His machismo swag, with ‘paan’ in mouth whilst cutting hair is a great addition to the Season. His delivery and street credibility have all the hallmarks of a genuinely authentic star. Guddu engages with Sheku and his workers, as Golu picks up the ironically named: ‘Sweety’ face cream.

Guddu tells Sheku Nai: “Sheher mein sab hee jaane, yeh hee goal hai humara”. As Guddu and Golu successfully entice Sheku’s goons to work for them, Sheku gives him a warning, however Guddu attempts to cement his position as the new ‘badass’ in Town, telling Sheku: “… Humare paas kuch kohne ke liye hai hee ni”.

Sinister Intentions…

Meanwhile, as J.P. prepares to checkmate his Brother and rise to power, Guddu and Shabnam go to visit Guddu’s Recovery Doctor. We soon notice that not all is as it seems. As they walk in, they notice Birthday Party Balloons covering the Doctor and his Wife in blood. In the Doctor’s hand… is the ‘Taveez’ of Sheku. As Guddu lifts the ‘Taveez’, his face is veiled with a thirst for vengeance, as Sheku has taken away the only happiness in Guddu’s newly adopted family life. A kneeling Guddu hears Lippy call out for her “Mama!” (newcomer Kiara Sadh). As Guddu brings Lippy back to Lala’s Mansion, Golu is angered and has somewhat become selfishly concerned with her own endeavours as she is unable to understand why Guddu has brought Home the newly orphaned Lippy. Shabnam, Guddu and Lippy together is a beautifully rare and happy sight in the otherwise mostly sombre World of Mirzapur.

As news breaks of CM Surya Pratap Yadav’s untimely death, all family members gather at the Hospital. In the Waiting Area, J.P. and Kaleen Bhaiya sit beside each other. Kaleen seems more annoyed rather than upset about his dear ‘Samdhi-Jee’: “Hum isliye dukhi nahi hai woh humare samdhi teh, dukhi isilye hai woh CM teh! … Bohot nuksaan ho gaya humara”. As Madhuri grieves, we witness Munna’s rare sensitive nature as he comforts his Wife: “Madhuri, hum best Husband nahi hai, lekin try karenge”.

Rise To Power…

As Amit Sial’s Maurya (one of my Excel favourites) hears about the ‘accident’ of the CM, he questions Sharad’s right hand man. This Season, we are taken into Maurya’s Home and are introduced to his Wife (Priyasha Bhardwaj), who is rather annoyed with her Husband bringing his ‘Work’ Home. Sial is a rare gem in Today’s Web Series World. A method Actor with a vast talent, who can camouflage himself into any role. He brings a stellar capability to the role, creating a deeply peculiar Officer, who is multi-dimensional himself… fighting for justice in his own unique way.

Sharad’s right hand man is exceedingly loyal. Even after a connection is made pointing towards Sharad Shukla, his ‘wafadaari’ is compelling as he does not ‘break’ even after enduring Maurya’s countless days of forceful questioning. He continues to remain loyal right until the end. I must say that ‘Loyalty’ in this Show is on a whole different level! Virendrapratap Giri has a rare quality in that, without saying a word he manages to make you feel for his character’s descent.

Back at the Barbarshop, Zarina’s ‘Bhojpuri’ music video, ‘Ding Dong’ plays in the background. The Customer having a Haircut (Rakesh Sharma) critically comments, “Gaane toh Bhojpuri mein banthay hain, Hindi main toh sab saale remix hain”. As Sheku Nai is visited by Guddu and Babar, Guddu takes a seat for a Haircut: “Kuch payee teh tumhara, woh bhi dene aye”, showcasing Sheku’s ‘Taveez’ that he left in the Doctor’s House. Guddu smashes Sheku into the mirror, as his colleague Tauseef (played by Kundan Kumar) pushes a pair of scissors towards the man having a Haircut. Sheku fights back pushing him into the ceiling fan. As the two fight, Guddu sits him down on the Barber chair, as the camera does a full 360 turn. Guddu reaches for the hairdryer and attempts to give the Nai a ‘Blow Dry’ by drying his grill in an iconically ‘Pulp Fiction-esque’ fight scene, as a painting of the Evergreen Star Vinod Khanna looks on. This has hallmarks of a Tarantino-style directed scene with a truly Desi twist. As Tauseef gives Guddu his walking cane, we catch glimpses of Guddu’s rise to power.

As Guddu has successfully taken over, he later sits on the Barber chair and tells his new team: “Jo Humaiya liye Kara hoga, waheen Balia main badha hoga”. Later, he informs his employees: “Free mein kuch nahi milta…jab kaam ayega, karne bolenge. Na karna uss wakt option nahi hoga!”. As Guddu looks at his fist holding the cane, his new loyal subjects chant the words “Guddu Pandit!” He whispers to himself “Bablu Pandit”, in a self reflective mind-frame becoming the true ‘Bahubali Of Balia’.

An exceptionally great Manu Rishi Chadha returns as the I.G. As Maurya and Ramakant visit his Office, he cautiously warns Ramakant that his Son Guddu will also face the Law: “…Jab safai hogi, toh poore tareeke se hogi. Samuj re na aap?”. To which Ramakant ethically responds, “…Ek inch nahi hutenge!”

Following on from J.P. Yadav’s political destruction and downfall, the position of Chief Minister remains vacant and our ‘King of Mirzapur’, Kaleen is rather pleased and assured that he will also gain this ‘New Title’ to his credits. However his Bahu, Madhuri makes the ultimate decision to nominate herself forward, with a plan of correcting the now tainted image of the ‘Lok Swaraj Party’. I was very pleased with Madhuri’s decision from a feminist standpoint, as she is now in charge. Since marrying Munna, I was afraid that she would become too domesticated and ‘controlled’. But her new position as CM reinstates a newfound power within Madhuri and I can’t wait to see her character arc develop furthermore next Season.

A New Addition To The Family…

After 9 Months of scheming, Beena finally gives birth to a new Heir, giving Munna a new Rival and Beena a new ‘Blanket of Security’ in the Tripathi household.

With Dimpy and Robin’s romance turning more serious, Dimpy takes him home to Mirzapur, where Ramakant very cleverly puts forth a ‘condition’ to Robin in order to marry his Daughter. Ramakant turns to Robin to gain some insider information into Guddu’s endeavours: “Guddu ki sab information chayee…”. I sincerely hope that Robin does become an integral part of the Pandit family, as Ramakant so lovingly states: “Ab yeh humare Dhamaad nahi, Beta honge”. As Ramakant uses Robin’s given information to file an arrest warrant, we later discover that Maurya has other plans in mind, as he requests assertively: “Encounter! Guddu Pandit!”

An Earth Shattering Realisation…

Munna eventually discovers that Maqbool has not ‘dealt with’ the Babar situation, therefore he decides to conduct a ‘Lesson on Loyalty’! As Babar comes Home with ‘Seviyaan’ to wish his Nani ‘Eid Mubarak’, I fear the worst! But it is a surprise and absolutely unforgivable, as to what happens to Maqbool’s peaceful ‘Ammi’ (played by an engagingly emotional Lalita Katgara).

As Maqbool kneels beside the freshly fragrant flowers gently sprinkled across the graves of his family, Bauji and Kaleen visit to pay their final respects (but really to justify the actions of their future Heir!) Both senior members of the Tripathi Clan show a lack of remorse for what has transpired, as Bauji disturbingly claims: “Tripathio ki dee wi Zindagi, samjo Tripathio ne wapas leli”. As Kaleen puts his hand on Maqbool’s shoulder, he utters: “Hum samuj sakte hai Maqbool, tumhare sar se saaya utt jaane ka dard”. Maqbool looks towards Kaleen and then towards Bauji. Maqbool finally has an earth shattering realisation of where his loyalties lie. As the Audience looks deeply into his eyes, we can see Maqbool has mentally discarded his precious Tripathis, a broken loyalty which we could never have envisaged, but is ultimately necessary for the sake of his own redemption. Maqbool contemplates all night, before finally setting off on his mission. As he leaves the Cemetery, he carefully places his diary on top of the grave of his nearest and dearest.

As Maqbool marches into the Tripathi Haveli, it is the beginning of the physical descent of the Tripathi Clan, starting with the most senior! For Bauji, it is just another stereotypical day, watching wildlife documentaries whilst sipping on his chai. The door opens and Bauji grows suspicious… As Bauji places his chai on the table and reaches for his gun, Maqbool shoots his fingers off. Ironically, Bauji’s hand looks like what a self-exploding, faulty ‘kata’ would do (remember those from Season One?). Maqbool’s intentions are transparent, as he emotionally states that in order for Kaleen to understand Maqbool’s current state of mind, he must also bear the mental anguish of a Son in mourning. As he prepares to aim at his previous ‘King of Mirzapur’, he is abruptly stopped by Beena (also in need of seeking her own vengeance): “Bauji ko tum nahi maaronge, Maqbool. Hum maarenge!”. Bauji proudly exclaims, “Auraat ke haath se hum nahi marenge!”

As Maqbool accepts this order from the ‘Lady of the Manor’, it’s arguably the ultimate revenge against the chauvinistic Bauji. As Beena aims to pull the trigger against her perpetrator, she is handed a meat cutter by one of Bauji’s other victims, as Radhiya (played with great authenticity by Prashansa Sharma) advises her ‘Malkin’ to use a more ‘colourful’ method. As Maqbool calmly sits on the ancestral Tripathi sofa, he witnesses a feminist ‘movement’ take place against the Beastly Bauji.

With the iconic Mirzapur Theme commencing in the background, the Wildlife Documentary on TV becomes a great metaphor, as it very aptly illustrates the Ants re-claiming their power from the once powerful ‘Tiger Green Beetle’.

Tensions Of Power Collide…

As Kaleen performs the final rites of his Father, he is greeted by his newly elected Boss/ Bahu and Son. Munna has finally gained the respect that he has always pined for and he takes full advantage to weigh it over his Father: “Yeh hee Auraat aaj CM hai Papa. Aap ke uphar!”. As tensions of power collide over the funeral pyre, Munna tells his Father how much his blood boils knowing that the ‘Mirzapur Ghadi’ is out of reach, even if he is worthy of it. He eventually tells his CM Wife that he will never give up on his dream to become ‘King Of Mirzapur’. As Munna abruptly exits the funeral, Beena becomes increasingly worried that her future Heir is Home alone. She immediately calls her right hand man, Raja to ‘deal’ with the situation. Raja then gears up as the Bodyguard for ‘his’ precious ‘Raja Beta’, as he takes his Bhabi’s gun from her ‘bindi’ drawer.

As Munna enters through a cloud of shower steam, he is temporarily fazed by a shooting Raja. As he waits for Raja to consecutively miss his aim, Munna viciously and successfully fights back. As Raja is trapped and we know that the end is near for this courageous character, Raja in his last act of loyalty misinforms Munna that he has been following the orders of Kaleen Bhaiya, protecting his beloved Bhabhi and ‘their’ Son: “Kaleen Bhaiya bheje…”

Choice Ki Baat…

In the Season Finale, Guddu has a decision to make, as Lala tells Guddu he will only allow Shabnam to marry Guddu if he can give up his thirst for revenge and violence. As Guddu contemplates, he receives a call from Beena, giving him the ‘green light’ to attack and expecting Guddu to uphold their deal (that Guddu will sit on the Throne and hand it over to Beena’s Son when he’s comes of age). As Guddu informs Golu that they will set off for Mirzapur, the Police arrives at Lala’s along with Ramakant and Maurya. The situation soon rages out of control, as Guddu holds Maurya hostage telling his Papa that he must go and nobody can stop him. Ramakant pleads for him to surrender, stating that he could eventually reduce his sentence. The situation becomes further aggravated as Maurya’s Encounter Unit holds Shabnam and Lippy hostage. Guddu is eventually forced to surrender for love.

On the way back to Mirzapur, Ramakant senses something is brewing… He later discovers Maurya holding Guddu at Gunpoint. As Ramakant arrives, he shouts: “Hum logo ka kaam, sazaa dilwana hai, dehna nahi!”. To which Maurya abruptly exclaims: “Sazaa milti kaha, Pandit ji?”. As Guddu awaits his fate, he whispers “Bablu” at the tip of his tongue. Ramakant swiftly responds against Maurya’s version of ‘justice’ and shoots Maurya, lightly grazing his Son’s neck. Both ‘Baap-Beta’ then finally have a heart to heart. Guddu says: “Choice ki baat ki… Aaj thi aur aap choone. Humme aur aap me koi farak nahi raha”. Ramakant frankly replies: “Farak hai Beta. Hum jo kiye, uski sazaa payenge…”

A New Monarch…

Returning to the Tripathis, an angered Munna informs Sharad of his intentions to kill Kaleen, giving this Mr. Shukla the greatest ammunition of all. Before setting off, Sharad informs his Mother, “Tripathio ki ek peeri gayee, baaki do toh bachi he na?”…Sharad then unveils Munna’s intentions to his Father’s oldest nemesis, Kaleen Bhaiya. Although Sharad is projecting in his Father’s path, he is doing so in his own unique and subtle way.

After sending away his mercenaries, Kaleen awaits his first-born. As Munna enters the ground where his Grandfather’s newly formed ashes lie, an ever so calm and unarmed Kaleen gently freshens up. Only Pankaj Tripathi’s Kaleen has the ability to treat such a situation in the most composed and peaceful manner. A discontent Munna trembles, as he aims his ‘bandhookh’ at the man who gave him life…

Much to Munna’s surprise, Kaleen informs Munna that he will abdicate his Throne as King and become Munna’s predecessor (as Bauji was to Kaleen): “Hum Babuji ki jagha. Humari jagha tum”. Father and Son embrace, as Kaleen utters Munna’s most desirable words: “Munna Tripathi! King of Mirzapur”. Sharad aims his golden ‘bandhookh’ at both but is soon interrupted as Guddu and Golu arrive with all guns blazing.

Munna’s Coronation is rather short-lived as both remaining Tripathis must defend their Clan. Kaleen grabs both guns and throws one to Munna as both fight back their ‘Dushmanns’. Although Guddu loses his cane in the battle, he does not stand down. What follows is a tag team standoff: Guddu-Golu vs. Kaleen-Munna!

Munna and Kaleen become physically weak, as they are both wounded. The roles have definitely reversed since Shabnam’s Wedding. It is now the Tripathis fighting for life! Both Tripathis continue to fight for their Kingdom, before Golu viscerally shoots Munna in the back, separating Father and Son onto the ground. Munna is floor ridden, just as Guddu was at Shabnam’s Wedding. Guddu now faces the killer of his ‘Do Jism Ek Jaan’ wala Bhai and pregnant Wife.

As Kaleen lies on the rubble near his Father’s funeral pyre, Guddu and Golu kneel in front of a bleeding Munna. As Munna splutters blood, Guddu leaks tears of anguish. As Golu aims the trigger, Munna directs her to the ‘right’ position. Munna’s eyes close and we all know that Guddu and Golu are waiting for Munna to open his eyes (the same way Munna waited before cruelly and mercilessly killing Bablu). As Munna’s eyelids open, Guddu whispers: “Hum wait hee kare teh, kab aap aanken khole aur…”. Then, both Guddu and Golu press their ‘bandhookhs’ against Munna’s chest and shoot. It is still spine chilling as Guddu lets out an excruciating painful cry and Golu kneels with a motionless glare.

A Cinematic Crescendo…

I believe that Bauji’s Funeral Pyre set piece alone was enough to carry on the entire Season Finale run- time of 66 minutes. In fact, I could have easily watched another hour of the Guddu-Golu vs. The Tripathis. As we felt so involved as Fans after the Season One Finale; those sore wounds that were inflicted upon us have been culminating for two years and it remains the core Storyline of Mirzapur Part Two that has the Fans completely grasped. Director Gurmmeet Singh, orchestrates this ‘Cinematic Crescendo’, which culminates through the flaming embers of Bauji’s funeral pyre, with all the major Mirzapur players present- closing the chapter on the long awaited vengeance for Sweety and Bablu!

This ‘Jee Ja Jee’ and ‘Sali’ Duo then seeks to perform the second part of this quest for revenge: to deal with the now ‘Ex King of Mirzapur’! However, they are interrupted by an overlooking Sharad, who keeps them distracted. As they return to Kaleen, they find an empty blood stained spot! It is then revealed that Sharad has come to Kaleen’s rescue and definitely has something up his sleeve, as he seeks to keep this Tripathi alive for his own goals. We then hear the magnetically addictive Eduri Theme play… as the yellow letters turn blood-soaked red.

The Fans are then gifted with an additional scene, as Guddu and Golu finally enter the Tripathi Niwas. Guddu sits on the long awaited Throne with his cane and leg on the stool. It’s wonderfully fulfilling as Guddu enjoys his new found role as ‘King’ and looks towards the two empty chairs beside him, rightfully reserved for Sweety and Bablu! One could argue that Guddu has put everything on the line and paid the price for the ultimate sacrifice, of becoming the ‘King of Mirzapur’, as he has risen from the College Student in awe of a grand life-style, to a Tripathi Employee, to finally taking over Mirzapur’s most privileged ‘Ghadi’.

Final Thoughts…

Now, I have waited until all the Reviews were written and people had ample time to watch the Show to write my own unique appreciation of Mirzapur Part Two. For me, it is not about ‘Likes’ or ‘Memes’ or even the ‘Buzz’. This is a Show that has truly changed my life. Had I not written about Mirzapur Part One, I would never have started writing about the Cinematic Arts. Thus, ‘Movie Mad Mimi’ would not be here right now!

This Show has created a World unto its own with its self made journey of highs and lows and a myriad of ‘mad’ Artists, who with their own unique style add to this multifaceted Cast and Crew that make up the magnificently mad Mirzapur! The legacy of this Show is that, despite new twists and turns, the core Story can continue for years to come. The Tripathis and the Pandits have left an everlasting legacy on the Audience, which will continue to pave the way for this revolution in OTT. The Success of Mirzapur should not be measured on Critics, whom I feel did not initially understand the Show back in 2018; Some even overlooked it until they realised the powerful Fandom regarding this Show. It is a testament to the great Cast and Crew and their path breaking interaction with the Fans that has truly made Mirzapur a household name. The real U.P. locations and music add to its great authenticity, as I still catch myself weeping a little, whenever I listen to ‘Varoon’. All those beautiful moments from Season One have still not left me. Season Two has equally created memorable moments that will be remembered for years to come and I’m so glad we were able to witness Bablu and Sweety’s wandering souls finally get justice!

Although, this ending was indeed justified, I couldn’t help but feel sadness for Munna and the newly widowed (again) Madhuri, who had just embarked on a beautiful love story. As the tree shelters a roof over Munna’s lifeless body, his soul has transcended through time and space, becoming the ‘Amar’ Munna of Mirzapur! This memorable legacy will continue to live on for years to come and I believe this is a true testament of Divyenndu’s fine portrayal as our favourite temperamental Tripathi. Divyenndu’s Munna will forever remain ‘immortal’ and will go down in the ‘Great Indian Rogues Gallery’. He could be as iconically path breaking as Amjad Khan’s Gabbar Singh, as sinister as Amrish Puri’s Thakur Durjan Singh, as captivating as Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Ganesh Gaitonde, as outlandish as Ranveer Singh’s Alauddin Khilji or even as unconventional as Tahir Raj Bhasin’s, Karan ‘Walt’ Rastogi.

It’s absolutely wonderful to witness an ‘Excel Universe’ form over the years, where Actors such as Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Vikrant Massey, Sheeba Chadha, Amit Sial and Manu Rishi Chadha have all been a part of previous Excel Entertainment Projects. All of whom, have delved deep into this World and left their mark in the magnetic and magnificent landscape of Mirzapur. This Season, we were treated to yet another ‘Excel wala’ join the Cast in the form of the vivaciously vibrant Vijay Varma.

In the Season Finale (in a Post Credit scene), Chote is secretly learning how to perform Badhe’s famous ‘Ring Trick’. As he fails, we find out that the broken-hearted Chote is very much alive and that Badhe lost his life in that Finale family shoot-out alongside their Mama ji (Shrikant Verma). This will be an interesting angle for Vijay Varma’s dualistic character in Season Three, as we’ll still see a Badhe and Chote Tyagi (but just not at the same time, obviously). The idea of a new family was not welcomed by all Fans, however I believe this to be a very brave decision by the Creative Team of Mirzapur and look forward to seeing a more compact Tyagi family next Season.

Movie Mad Mimi Asks:

  • Will Ramakant surrender for shooting Maurya?
  • Will Guddu and Shabnam get married?
  • If Guddu and Shabnam have a baby, will they readily give up the King’s Throne to Beena’s Son, as agreed?
  • Will Kaleen work out of Jaunpur?
  • Will Beena and her Son continue to live in the Tripathi Mansion or will she return to Kaleen?
  • Is Madhuri pregnant with Munna’s child? This would be an interesting angle, creating a new Heir.
  • Will Robin remain faithful to the Pandits?
  • Did Raja magically survive? (Maybe, he made a bullet-proof vest out of pots and pans!)
  • Will Chote seek revenge for his broken heart?
  • Will Dadda and Chote join forces with Kaleen and Sharad?
  • What is to become of Lala, as he was arrested in the Season Two Finale?
  • But the biggest question of all… Will Maqbool form an alliance with Guddu, against Kaleen and Sharad?

These were the set of questions I had post Season Two, but we must now remain patient if we are to see the third instalment in the future! Quality takes time and effort and I just know that Mirzapur Season Three will be crafted with the utmost careful consideration! So, let’s just wait patiently and leave the Creative Team at Excel Entertainment to it! In the meantime, you’ll find me listening to the exhilarating soundtrack on loop…And when the time does finally arrive for Season Three, I’ll be ready!
